A Reflection on Endings, Descent & the Mystery Before Rebirth
Inspired by Mysteries of the Dark Moon by Demetra George
Welcome.
I was inspired to share this today because—well—it’s my birthday. It marks the beginning of my 36th year on Earth.
very year, I find the month before my birthday to be… let’s say interesting. Something always stirs. Things feel tender, in motion, sometimes unresolved, but rich. This year was no different.
In the weeks leading up to today, I found myself making a big life decision—where to root, where to land. We are now moving into a new place, but it’s also a place that feels like a second home. A return.
My daughter is now four and my dreams and direction have shifted. My body feels different. My thoughts, too.
And so I’ve found myself reflecting—deeply—on the year that’s passed. Not just the highlights, but the quiet unraveling's. The growth I didn’t even realize I was moving through until now.
🌘 The Mystery Before Rebirth
Have you ever noticed that the weeks before your birthday feel strange?
For many, this time brings dreams, emotions, a desire to be alone. You may feel a deep pull inward, or the urge to clean, cry, or disappear from the surface of things. You may feel tired, unfinished, or filled with questions you can’t answer.
This is not random. It is the echo of a deeper rhythm. A sacred closing. A dark moon of the soul.
Each year, there comes a time when you begin to shed.
Not because something is wrong, but because something is ending. A personal cycle drawing to a close. A time of descent. Of stillness. Of mystery.
It is the Crone phase of your year—where wisdom whispers, shadows soften, and silence becomes sacred. Like the dark moon disappearing from the sky, you too may feel invisible. Weightless. Between who you’ve been and who you are becoming.
So Many of Us Feel It
Over and over, people speak to this time:
“I feel hollow or dreamy before my birthday.”“I want to clean everything, to cry, to be held and not speak.”“Something in me is dying—but I don’t know what yet.”
This is the mystery doing its work.Inward spiraling. Quiet composting. It may not make sense to your mind, but your soul knows.
🕯️ A Time to Honor Your Arrival
As your birthday approaches, you are not just gaining a year. You are remembering.
Remember the moment you first arrived. The womb you once rested in. The passage through darkness into breath.
This season is a quiet call to honor your origin:
The people who carried you here
The body that made space for you
The lineages you were born through
The dreams that surrounded your birth
Even if your birth story was complex or painful, it holds wisdom. You are allowed to grieve it, celebrate it, or simply sit beside it.
🌑 A Simple Ritual for This Time
The Dark Altar
Create a small altar with:
A dark cloth or shawl
A bowl of water (for the womb, for mystery)
A candle (for your inner fire)
An object from your childhood or ancestry
A symbol of what you are ready to lay down
Each week, light the candle and sit in silence. You may weep, breathe, or simply feel. Let yourself be seen by the Crone, the one who holds the wisdom of the end.
Say:
“I do not rush my becoming. I honor what is ending. I trust the space in between.”
And if you “accidentally miss” these practices—please know: They are yours whenever the time feels right. The dark moon waits for no one, but she welcomes all.Begin again, anytime.
🌀 Reflection for the Final Weeks
What needs to be released before I return to life?
What do I want to honor from the cycle that is ending?
What does the Crone within me know that I’ve forgotten?
Write. Walk. Speak aloud to the wind. You do not need to rush toward answers. Let the questions breathe.
☀️ On the Day of Your Birth
When the day of your birth arrives, you cross a threshold. Not just another year—but another spiral of the soul.
You may wish to:
Wake early and speak your name into the morning
Anoint your body with oil or water and whisper:“Thank you for carrying me this far.”
Light a candle for your ancestors
Eat something nourishing, slowly and with gratitude
Walk barefoot and breathe deeply into the earth
Let the day be simple. Let it be real. Let it be yours.
Hope you enjoyed this, remember to save it for your birthday or send it to a friend. Love, Danielle
